Investigate the Professors

All instructors are not created equal! Some are brand new to teaching, others have been teaching since the dawn of time, some are friendly and energetic about their students' success, while others are just going through the motions because it's their job. Some classes are very regimented while others are very laid back. Know which style you perform best in and try to find the Professors that match that style.

If you can maximize your chances of being placed in classes with great teachers, you will maximize your chances of success at the University of Maryland University College. Here are my suggestions for how you can go about doing just that:

  • As soon as you are able to see your assigned instructor, ask around to all your former classmates/professors if they know the professors you're signed up with and if they have any advice for working with that particular person.
  • Keep your ears open for professors you hear are difficult, in case you get signed up with them in later semesters so you can transfer into a different section.
  • When you find a professor you love, ask them what other classes they also teach at UMUC. It's quite possible they teach other courses that you also have to take, and if you find a great teacher make a note next to your overall degree plan next to that class for who to ask for.
  • Call your advisor to switch professors if you need to prior to the start of class.
  • Go to the following websites to see if you can find your professors:
