Computer file organization

It is important to understand that the work you do each semester in every class needs to be saved, well organized, and clearly labeled on your computer as you work on and complete each and every assignment. This is because you may need to reference the work at a later date -- even well after graduation -- and by having it clearly organized now, you will save a world of headache later on when you're trying to find something.

It's easy to think that once you're finished with whatever class you're currently in, you will never need the information again. I have found this to be very far from the truth! I graduated almost two years ago and I still have to reference my course work every once in a while to help me with a current project. Just believe me when I say you need to develop a good organizational system now, before you begin, and trust that you will thank yourself later.

Here are my suggestions for getting your files organized:

  • Create a main "school" folder in your Documents directory that will hold folders for each semester.
  • Create sub-folders for each semester within the School folder. Label them something like, "FALL06" or "SPRING07" etc.
  • Create sub-folders for each class within each semester folder. Make sure to include the name of the class as well as the course number because after a year or two you'll have no idea what the course number was but you're likely to recognize the name of the class.
  • Save a text document of "notes" in each class directory, to include the professor's name and email address (you never know when you may need this information later on!).
  • Save all your homework files with clearly labeled file names within each class folder (you never know when you may need them again sometime).
