Have an open discussion with family/friends

When you make a commitment to complete your online degree in an accelerated environment, there are certain sacrifices that you will have to make. Realize this up front and discuss it with those around you so that there are no surprises or disappointments. You will need the support of your loved ones and friends in order to reach your goal; you cannot accomplish it on your own!

Here are my tips for things to talk about with your family and friends before you start your accelerated schedule of classes at the University of Maryland University College:

  • Talk to your family, friends, co-workers, bosses. Be completely open and honest with your needs, goals and expectations. Whomever will be affected by your new schedule should be made aware of what you need in the form of support for your goals.
  • Ask for help with daily duties. Don't try to be Superwoman/Superman!
  • Be prepared to forgo parties, gatherings, trips if necessary for the duration of the semester. Look ahead at your calendar so you can know beforehand any potential issues.
  • Acknowledge the fact that you'll have a one-track mind for a while, and accept it as ok.
  • Expect difficult times to come up; plan for them. Births still happen, deaths still happen, financial difficulties will happen… Don't let these things throw you off your path.
  • Keep your sense of humor! It will always come in handy.
