Tips for Success at UMUC

If you're just starting out at the University of Maryland University College, or if you've been a student at UMUC for a while and just want to increase your course load, this site will give you the information you need to successfully accomplish your educational goals. Although the information on this site was written in 2008, it remains relevant for as long as UMUC continues to use WebTycho as their online classroom environment.

I began my Undergraduate courses at the University of Maryland University College in 2001, when I already had 56 credits from Montgomery College -- and about 15 years of professional experience in the workplace. After a few years of taking it slow at UMUC and following all the rules, the turning point came during one summer semester when I spent so many hours reading the textbook only to take the final exam and saw that NOT ONE question was from my textbook readings. Every assignment during the semester and the final exam were based on information found solely in the course modules and the conference discussion topics.

I paid attention the following semester and noticed this was true for every class. So I increased my course load by a couple of classes, and noticed since I was forgoing reading the textbook assignments, I still had leftover time during the week that could have been spent on class work. This is when I started adding more classes each semester, until the point where I finally reached five per semester. I took five classes per semester for a year and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007, with a 3.906 GPA.

These are my tips for you to have the same success I had. These are not guarantees of course. They are simply suggestions based on what worked for me. If you get yourself organized, keep up with all your assignments, and stay organized and current throughout the entire semester, you will do well. I hope these tips help you to succeed in whatever educational goals you may have.
